There was one survivor of Torpedo 8, Ensign George Gay. He was awarded the Navy Cross, Purple Heart and Presidential Unit Citation for his actions in combat at Midway and was later awarded an Air Medal.

After his rescue the next day by a PBY Catalina flying boat, Navy doctors were amazed at the how well he was doing given his wounds and asked him what he had done to treat them. He replied that he had soaked them in salt water for 24 hours.

Yes, and had a front row seat to the Akagi going down. He was also strafed by the Japs.
