If I turn the phone way down and fall asleep before someone texts, the chances are good I’ll sleep through it. Usually. Otherwise, the vibration on the wooden nightstand (or in the drawer) will wake me up. It comes from so many years of living alone — part of my mind is awake, listening for sounds that don’t belong.
