I suppose he was making a “living wage,” give or take a trip to Costco with his father and a steak dinner or two, but he knows he’s worth more, even by the strictest definition: he’ll find a better-paying job within a week or two, and then give notice at Chipotle.

A living wage is OK, if that’s what one can be satisfied with, but Tom doesn’t strike me as the kind of person who will be happy in a minimum wage job.
He’s wise enough to look beyond today.
