One way to defray at least some of that expense is to separately select and pay for your choice of caskets from someone other than your "family" mortician. They may not like it, but that can be added to the list of things to negotiate.

Why no, I haven't done that. Why would I?

Well, thanks, Bob. I would never have thought of that. Probably because I’ve only recently found out where the cemetery is, and I may have some shirt-tail cousins who are buried there, but I would have to search several family genealogies to find out.

That idea of selecting a casket from elsewhere, though, isn’t a bad idea. So I checked:
