A Thought For The Old Year
“Happy New Year!” They all want to say,
With little regard for what’s slipping away,
A year of fond hopes and bright dreams is now gone,
And we only have thoughts of the new ones to dawn.
Take just a moment to think of the past,
The days now gone by that made memories last.
We had all the birthdays. We ate all the cake.
We had great good times and now, goodness sake,
They want to forget it with hardly a nod,
A whole year forgotten. I think that it’s odd.
One day, in our dotage, we’ll all reminisce,
On those “Good Old Days” we’re so willing to miss.
A thought for the old year seems timely tonight,
Its lengthening shadow drifts slowly from sight.
The old year departs with a staggering tread,
As we watch a new year toddle in, in its stead.
It will sleep with the others in a long endless pile,
But I’d like to point out that it went out with style.
There isn’t a doubt that it’s one for the books,
But it’s clearly not one we’d have chosen for looks.

It would be most terrible if that were true.
Actually, it's very sobering to realize that our lives, if measured in weekends instead of years, come up dismally short in numbers.
Five thousand weekends, five thousand Mondays, five thousand Fridays, they all seem like a pitifully small number, but make the most of it. Nobody wants to be endlessly old.
But endlessly old is not what I want, I'd rather be endlessly young.
I only want a million days.
Your heart beats about a million times in a week, for what it’s worth.
I think I read that a human heart can beat a billion times. That actually any animal of our approximate shape and size can do that.
But what is remarkable is that a human heart can continue for another billion heartbeats, that human beings can have twice as many heartbeats as an animal our size.
Part of that is no doubt paying attention to our diet and health, but it is inarguable that another significant part is due to will and determination.
You can find the relevant statistics in seeing that deaths cluster around the aftermath of Holidays, birthdays, celebrations, and gatherings. We live longer because we have something to live for.
You especially have much to live for. May you live long and prosper. Enjoy life’s diversity and its endless combinations of delight and mystery.
Delight and hysteria, maybe. I expecting longevity. In my family tree, those who don’t smoke live a long time.
One Day
One day, we’ll all be happy,
One day, we’ll be content,
One day, we’ll be aware of,
Exactly what God meant.
He told us we should love ourselves,
Just as we love our brother,
A purpose for life’s bounty,
To share with one another.
One day we may accept that,
Begin to understand,
One day to spread the love of God,
In peace throughout the land.
One day to find contentment,
A day to feel so blessed,
We’ll choose to be His servant,
And also be His guest.

And to those who lost more than they thought they could bear, take heart, because you survived to fight another day.
Above all, remember that God is good and trials are there to strengthen us.
