Its irrelevant who they replace Joe with. If he drops out before Nov 3, the votes for him are invalid. They would not go to his replacement. You’re looking at least 30% dem votes thrown out. Who would even show up at the polls for them?

You are voting for an elector. That elector is committed to the nominee of the party. If the nominee changes that is irrelevant. The elector still votes for the nominee.
