In the Mafia, to advance to "made man" status, you have to commit a murder, witnessed by other Mafia members. There's a similar requirement in a lot of street gangs. It's a way to ensure the applicant is not working for the police.

It's a way to be sure the member is fully committed.

I'm sure that, for the international elites, there's a requirement that no one may be fully trusted unless he puts himself in a position where he can be destroyed if he betrays the group.

I can see people being required to do things at various levels of initiation to the inner circles.
