Imma stick with surgical.
Pretty much.
Seems like I’ve read that surgical masks are only about 40% efficient at stopping aerosols even in ideal conditions (no leaks). I will say that I think most masks probably do a decent job of stopping larger droplets from traveling as far. As such I’m open to the idea that they’re better than nothing. Definitely don’t think they’re the game changer that some make them out to be though.
That depends on if they’re rated as N95 or not as high. But the thing with surgical masks is that their design CANNOT have no leaks - their physical shape allows for the majority of breath air flow to go around the edges of the mask. And the better the filtration level, the MORE air will go around the mask. The air flow is basic fluid dynamics: it follows the path of least resistance.
These masks may help a bit for larger droplets, but the small help is more than offset by the negatives, and the compromising of the mask by people not following proper wearing/decon procedures.
