It was really quite smart for Trump to mention the Proud Boys when he told them to stand down. The Proud Boys support Trump and have been falsely labeled as white supremacists. Now the fact checkers have to look into them. Trump may have just exonerated the Proud Boys.— Ian Miles Cheong

Everyone’s making it seem like stand by means that he’s telling them to wait in the wings ready to strike. This is the also the definition, words and phrases have multiple meanings, it paired with stand down implies this definition not what people are trying to imply The stand down and stand back comment was perfect. He didn’t condemn them and should have no reason to.
