If the cans were full it is the ultimate fire protection system. If the cans are empty I hope he washed them out first. Imagine the stale beer smell on a hot day.
Anybody who drinks that much is a full blown alcoholic (cf Proverbs 23:29ff) and is totally immune to the smell.
Like a smoker. They stink, but don't know it.
