I was surprised to raed about a giant fire in WA state, so I looked at inciweb, the best place to find info on wildfires. You zoom into states or areas to see the details. Occasionally it may take a day to get info up. But a huge fire such as he describes would be on there I would think.
First of all he says there were no fires in WA. But there are several that have been burning for a while. There is one large fire that is likely the one he means, hard to tell the rate of increase. Anyway, go take a look. When DH used to work wildfires, I checked this site all the time.

This appears to be the large fire he’s referring to and I think the large area on Dutch’s map may be the smoke, as the detailed map I looked at show a different shape/size of burned area:
