I tried using a can. Lined the lid with that metallic-like —maybe mylar— tape. I could not get the can to pass my empiric test. Perhaps I need to line the rim with Al+++ foil.

I guess you mean line the rim when you say 'line the lid'. Home Depot sells metallic tape. My post mentions that these trash cans are not the best sealed units for a faraday cage. If metallic tape does not seal it you could try putting a roll of foil under the rim of the lid when fastening it then use metallic tape.

bigbob seems to feel that the lining or seal may not be critical. You can address your concerns to him/her, I suppose. I do not have first hand experience with the metal trash cans; as I said earlier, I use a surplus military case.
