There is a disconnect to reality on all sides of this. Thanks to the media, both left and right, people tend to think this civil unrest and chaos is much larger than it really is. Most of it involves small numbers of rioters in well-defined areas. Stories about this are combined with stories of violence in the inner city and urban corridors thanks to the withdrawal of the police and general quality of life crimes.

Most cities have not seen this violence and destruction and will not tolerate it, but with continued lock-downs more people view what they see on the news or their computer monitor as reality. In a nation already skittish with fear over the Chinavirus it is distorting reality.

I have friends who live outside Portland and their neighborhoods and retail corridors have seen little disruption outside of more graffiti. They are generally conservative, but they are also minimizing what is happening there because they have not witnessed it.

"...they are minimizing what is happening there because they have not witnessed it..."

I suppose rioting could occur within a dozen miles of my home...and I similarly would not see it "live" because I would be home avoiding the violence.
Normal people, with normal families, normal friends, and normal homes do not gravitate to riots without good cause...such as to protect their livelihoods.

One wonders if this is also the response of otherwise sane people seeking to instinctively "somehow" preserve their real estate investment?
I would undoubtedly be horrified if my attractive and fairly affluent neighborhood literally began disintegrating into worthless rubble, too.

But it is, though not as overt. The endless unrest has been encouraging and emboldening like minded creatures outside the main trouble zones, who want to be with the cool kids. Some are now getting mouthy and more open with it even in my locale which has not been seen before. The other fallout is that law enforcement has been effectively cowed if not neutered, everywhere. Not just the big metro areas like Chicago, NYC, Portland, Seattle - I mean EVERYwhere. Every county, every town of every size. Nobody wants to be "that guy" on Youtube or the 6 o'clock news, so there is strategy to either keep out of or withdraw away from situations that could put them there.

The cluster of municipalities I live in the midst of vary in population of 22,000+, 26,000+, 78,000+ and 127,000+. They don't have riot gear, crowd control resources nor the personnel to execute it - never in anyone's wildest imagination such supplies would ever be needed in the first place. Outside of what few non-lethal supplies possessed by SWAT teams, that leaves deadly force - which is what the Marxists would love to provoke. It then comes down to dis-engagement. A recent example of that is from last Saturday, the 29th of August. A possible portent of things to come occurred around 2 p.m. when an agitated guy began pacing back and forth outside the front of a furniture store yelling "Kill me now! There's a race war all over town!" at the top of his lungs. But he disappeared before the cops showed up. Then at 7:30 that evening an officer came up on the radio yelling for help - there was a mass gathering in a city park that was not cooperative and had weapons. Units began responding from all over the county. That lasted only a short time before an order went out to reverse the response and retreat - which was prudent under the circumstances. The crowd didn't care what the police wanted and weren't interested in cooperation - things could only escalate out of control. Fortunately they dispersed on their own. But what if a day comes that they won't. That is the concern.
