Grew up around there, vaguely remember that church but not real certain.

Left Illinois in '64 and never considered going back even to visit. Looks like even more evidence my Dad made a good call.

Officials say the church was abandoned, condemned, and did not have power. Fire officials say police were called to the church just 30 minutes before the fire started because a group of people were gathered outside.

Rockford Fire Chief says old structures like this church, which is made out of timber, are extremely dangerous. here’s a lot of hazards with old buildings, that’s why we’re not going inside. This building was condemned. We don’t want to put any of our people in harm’s way,” said Rockford Fire Chief Derek Bergsten.
