I came to the conclusion two months ago that meaningful studies on hydroxychloroquine were not being done. When the CDC prohibited its use unless it was in a registered study, I searched the database of registered studies. There were no properly designed studies in the data base to test the benefits hypothesized by clinicians for patients in the early stages of the infection. I did find some interesting information. Iran required all their studies to have hydroxychloroquine by itself as the treatment for the control group.
