The players have nobody but themselves to blame. The Big Ten announced protocols and a schedule. But then, through an article in the Player's Tribune, the players made all sorts of additional demands of the Big 10 before they'd agree to play. They said the Big 10's protocols for having a season and dealing with Covid were inadequate, and they made a whole slew of additional demands, many of which were ridiculous. It's all right here:

After that, the Big 10 reversed course and announced that they couldn't have a season. Whether that decision was due to all the additional demands is unknown. But I wouldn't doubt for a second that the prospect of liability, blame, and bad press from players figured into that decision.

Yes and the Pac-10 demands were even more demanding. They really did bring this down on themselves.

The players were attempting to form a union.

And that may be the reason that there will be no football this year. I have no illusion that the “spring ball” season will happen.
