That doesn't affect FR as much, since the site doesn't host images. For the chans and theDonald, which also have their own image servers, it puts a bigger load on the server. It also consumes bandwidth, and the more bandwidth consumption, the more it costs to host the site.
One twelve megabyte image can use as much bandwidth as several thousand text posts.
On sites that host their own images, it can also slow page loading. On FR, it loads the FR page content, then attempts to load the remote linked images. On sites that host their own images, it can substantially slow down page loading.

What you said is true. The usual fix is to not allow images over a certain size. It’s an old dilemma.

It may not slow the board down (anymore) but it certainly slows down people on low bandwidth devices from being able to read the threads.
