Can't speak for other cities/states but it was only a few years ago that a NYC taxi medallion went for a million dollars.I don't know what kind of lobbying capabilities they have in state capitals or in DC but you can be sure that they're not thrilled to see the rise of Uber.

Here in Pennsylvania the taxi cab medallion people lost that battle.
Democrat politicians decided they coveted the votes of Uber-loving Millenials more than graft and kickbacks from the cab operators.
Given who those people are I honestly thought we’d see more politicians’ heads turning-up in rivers.

I think about typical leftist pandering.
50,000 workers, completely outside their massive political plantation of punishments and incentives is too much to bear. it had to be addressed.
