I noticed that the answer to 9 x __ always began with a numeral one less than __ and the two numerals of the answer would add up to 9.

The answer to 9 x 5 would therefore start with a 4 and had to add up to 9.

4 + ___ = 9

4+ 5 = 9 , so the answer to 9 x 5 is 45.

12345678 x 8 + 8 = 98765432
123456789 x 8 + 9 = 987654321
