Trump didn’t say he was sure to win, just stating he thinks he could do better there then last election - which makes Dems have to spend money and time defending it.

No, political realism says his campaign money should be concentrated on the battleground states which are absolute necessities for either party to win. I don’t think Dems are going to waste spending campaign funds on Texas just as I think Trump is savvy enough to know not to waste his time on deeply blue New York or California, particularly when both states may access mail in ballots to skew vote totals.
He knows he will be getting the best bang for his buck spending time and money in purple or slightly blue states
