The cataclysmic explosion which ripped through Beirut on Tuesday is just the latest disaster to strike the city once known as the ‘Paris of the East’

Rescuers searched for survivors today at the port after the blast sowed devastation across entire neighbourhoods, killing more than 100 people, wounding thousands and plunging Lebanon deeper into crisis.

Bullet holes remain studded into walls around Beirut, a reminder of the brutal and bloody civil war that ended 20 years ago but more recently, Lebanon has been preparing to face a new enemy.

Wow, Beirut hasn’t been that thoroughly bombed since the U.S.S. New Jersey cruised off their coast in ‘83 and ‘84.

Sad to see Beirut go the way of Portland and San Fran. Very sad.

Too late for the frenchies.

It’s now the Will of Allah, large and in charge of Lebanon.

This is Khobar Towers, Beirut. 19 of my fellow Air Force flightline maintenance brethren were killed there, and nearly 500 more were injured.

Buck Feirut.

"Maybe Allah is trying to send a message."

The local peeps were apparently pretending to be hard of hearing.

Allah fixed that.

They say the explosives came in and where stored there since 2014. Where’d they come from? (Libya). Where were they going? (ISIS).

Indeed - its not just “bad luck” - its corruption, incompetence, and a general 3rd world and corrupt Muslim attitude towards government.

From what I have learned so far - the government (customs?) impounded a large shipment on a Ukrainian-flagged vessel of dangerous ammonium nitrate - in 2013!!

So they let this highly explosive cargo sit for 7 years, in what appears to be a regular, uncontrolled port warehouse. WTF?! Sheer incompetence and stupidity.

Beirut was the Paris of the Middle East.
Now, Paris is the Beirut of Europe.

The Top Sergeant of the Marine Detachement aboard the USS JFK while I was on it was the senior enlisted killed in that attack (Sgt Maj Frederick Douglass.)

I remember reading an account of it when it happened, and they had his picture...I couldn’t remember his name, but when I saw that face, I remembered who he was.

I was at a party in the walled in USMC compound in Alexandria, Egypt back in 1977, where the USMC embassy detachment had invited the entire ship to their compound to party, and it was a wild one, indeed. There were thousands of men there, and I went into a narrow, single room bathroom with some dilapidated shutters over the toilet tank. I was pretty hammered, and as I was peeing, I heard someone getting a new butthole ripped outside the window.

I casually opened the shutters to look out, and it was Gunnery Sgt Douglass who I knew from the ship, completely dressing down some terrified young marine.

As I peered out and took this scene in, he turned to me with a set of intense, dark eyes and said “If you don’t close that window and mind your own business, I am going to come in there and kick your ass.” (or something like that)

Needless to say the shutters went click-click and I went about my business.

some six year later, reading the Boston Globe (He was from the South Shore) and seeing that picture, it was those same intense eyes peering out from the newspaper.

He was, by all accounts, a remarkable man.

Islam is like unto American Democrat Party which is like unto Socialism. It trashes everything over which it has dominion.
