That's why I am surmising advanced weaponry.

Nuclear weapons have become obsolete (thankfully) before being used outside of the demonstrations in Japan.

As bad as this is, it doesn't compare to the The Severomorsk Disaster in May of 1984. That took place over FOUR days.

About six months later I spent an afternoon going over satellite imagery of the area pre and post disaster. Calling it a disaster was largely an understatement. It wasn't publicized much at the time but it largely crippled the Soviet Red Banner Northern Fleet and contributed to the eventual fall of the Soviet Union.

If there had been atomic weaponry at either site they would not have detonated. The conventional explosives would have ripped the bombs apart and spread the material like a dirty bomb. The second alternative is bad enough but infinitely preferable to an atomic detonation.
