I was told by a Vanderbilt graduate/researcher that margarine was developed from bearing grease.
LOL,when I was 9, I at the last minute told my parents that the Cub Scouts, that the Pinewood Derby was the next day and all I had was a block of wood.
My mother got out the electric carve knife, and she carved out a racing car, and we painted it. When it was done, it really did not work well, and she said lets 'Oleo"(margarine the wheels).
Long story short, I won second prize, and my mother was proud that she had beaten the local mechanical engineer's son's car in the Pinewood Derby.
True story.
I faintly recall a reference that a British SAS force in either Yemen or Oman used margarine from their ration packs to lubricate machine guns during a prolonged siege.
