When I was young I thought about applying for Oz too. It was a point in my life when I was adrift and feeling somewhat useless. Getting a letter from another country telling me I’d be useless there too would not have helped.

My mother used to go on rants about moving there in the 70’s so that none of her boys would be drafted and sent to Vietnam. This kind of talk would really upset my father.

I don’t know if they had a draft but Australian troops fought alongside the US in Vietnam. If you wanted to avoid the draft Canada was the go to spot. There is actually a very obscure Aussie movie called the Odd Angry Shot about Aussies in Vietnam that is quite good if you can find it.
