My wife took this stuff as a malaria prophilactic when she had to go to some SH**hole country in west Africa. No problem.
What I read about this stuff early-on was that it shortened the illness; e.g., instead of feeling like you WANT to die for 10 days you feel better in 6.
But, Trump touted it, so it must be bad and has been fought on that basis only.
Saw a video day before where a doc had prescribed the drug — and got a call from the pharmacist asking Why. He told them that the Why was between him and the patient and the pharmacist to mind his own business. Pharmacist went away and filled the prescription.
