I read a story about - true or not who knows, about an old black guy being chastised by a younger guy for allowing himself to be called “colored”.
Old guy said something to the effect of “better than what they called me before I became “colored”.
I would think people of color or colored people would include all of the darker skinned people, not just “blacks”. People don’t understand what a slur is these days. Negro is a perfectly fine Spanish word which was used for African Americans so it would not be confused with the English word for the color black. The “N-word” is a slur, it is the word Negro intentionally mispronounced and said with a tone of contempt. Colored is the same way, I suppose, it’s not just the word, it’s when it’s slurred into somethng like “col’uhd” or even worse referring to groups as ‘coloreds’ that it becomes offensive. Like you didn’t used to be able to call some one a “J3w” you had to call them a Jewish Person.
