Since April, Sweden’s reception of so-called quota refugees has been on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the country has now announced it will start taking in refugees again.

“Quota refugees” is the term given to refugees (people in need of protection who cannot live in their home countries) who have arrived in the EU, and are sent to different countries according to a quota system to avoid certain countries being overwhelmed by high numbers of arrivals.

Sweden was set to receive 5,000 refugees through the system this year, but had only accepted around 1,300 when the system was suspended since early on in the European coronavirus outbreak.

But the UN’s refugee agency (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) resumed work on the quota system in June, and Sweden has now determined that it can start accepting refugees again, after discussions between the Migration Agency and Public Health Agency. …

I would say most Swedes are against this policy, but it does not matter. In the last election the socialists and the green party were consigned to a minority (~40%). But then two parties from the centre/right coalition broke away and handed the left power for another four years.

Seventeen years ago we managed to hold a referendum on joining the euro. The result was 56% no, 42% yes on a 85% turn-out. If the parliament had been allowed to decide the question the result would have been roughly 85% yes, 15% no.

We have a representative democracy, it is just that our politicians do not represent the people. Unclear who they represent, really. Judging from history this a pretty dangerous situation. One wonders what will happen if the next election result is also overturned by parliamentary tricks? Sweden has lived in peace since 1814. How much longer?

A 1996 Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention noted that Muslim immigrants from North Africa were 23 times more likely to commit rape than Swedish men. Then they stopped reporting the race based statistics.
