Everyone knows they are playing with fire with debitcards.

Tell her to grow up and learn. Get a credit card and pay it off with auto draft.

I always have my debit and credit cards from my bank turned off. If I’m going to use them, I activate them while I’m standing there, let the charge go through, and turn the card off immediately.

I’m glad I did that because I got notification, several months back from my bank one day someone tried to use the card for a purchase of a guitar and related equipment to the tune of $500 which was denied because the card was off. The bank let me know. the card was cancelled and a new card issued.

Actually, most are clueless. Many never even know what happened. Giving folks access to your accounts via debit cards is financial Russian Roulette.

We’ve stopped using our debit card for anything. I’ve had multiple instances of credit theft after using a debit card. The last time someone cloned and used mine at an ATM to withdraw $1,000 in cash. I’m pretty sure someone skimmed it at a gas pump. It’s just not worth using the debit card since you really put your liquidity at risk. Better to use a credit card for necessary card purchases since you aren’t risking your ability to pay the mortgage/rent.

Many companies today - medical billing in particular - will only accept direct bank EFT withdrawals. No cards at all. To be safe, you just have to write them checks. I’m sure they hate that. :)

Yes credit cards are great for the consumer. Debits not so much.
