Were about a week away from removing any doubt that the virus is killing large numbers of people (except for the folks who will say all the extra bodies lying in hospital hallways and refrigerated trucks had heart attacks).

No, it’s just the way the virus works.
First a spike in positive cases - no extra deaths. People can take a couple of weeks to get sick enough for the hospital.
Then a spike in hospitalizations - no extra deaths.
Hospitalized people who die can take 3-4 weeks to die after entering the hospital, so based on the spike in hospitalizations over the last couple of weeks, we’ll start to see deaths really spike in about a week.
No need to argue about it now - let’s just wait a week and if I’m wrong I’m happy to admit it (and I hope I’m wrong).
