If you had to pick only ONE great band or musical group of the past 50 years who would it be?

“A good solid second to ABBA.”

Says the Dancing Queen.

The Beatles. I despise sir paul and his politics which he should just keep to himself, but one thing that seperates the Beatles from all other groups is this. When you are riding along listening to music on your car radio, at least with me, there is no other group who does not have some songs that will cause me to search for something else. Every Beatles song I can think of is totally listenable.

Maurice White...the guy who said EW&F could have been bigger than the Beatles...if they weren’t black. (and if they had more than 3 good albums)

but Lennon and Ringo weren’t great musicians. “””

Yes and no. I was in early grade school when the Beatles came along and I knew the Ringo was no great technician or virtuoso. We’d see him sitting back there smiling blandly and biddy-bopping around the kit like someons grandpa.

Later in life, however, I wrote a great many songs and, in my old age and wisdom, Ringo was one of a handful of drummers I’d have hired in a heartbeat, if I could, to record them.

Ringo wasn’t just there keeping time. He created drum parts that pushed and enhanced the songs and tended to stick in the minds of even casual listeners. The Beatles would not quite have been the Beatles with out Ringo

Buddy Rich, who was a rocket engine when it came to pushing a song, talked of the “appropriate-ness” of the drum lines Ringo wrote. Buddy wasn’t no nice guy. He’d rip anybody he didn’t like. For him to say such a thing about a drummer who’s physical skills he could have smoked when he was 12 is itself testimony to the certain something that Ringo had.

"The Beatles broke up around 1970"

That JUST puts them into the last 50 years, and gives them my vote, too.

Agree 100%, Mermaid Smiled, is a fantastic song, I think Runt really did a fantastic job producing that album.

Even though I favor rock, I always enjoyed Earth, Wind and Fire - great instrumentals, great voices. But, if I were limited to choosing only one artist to listen to (forever) it would be Santana (up until Milagro). His portfolio includes such a variety of sounds (rock, latin, jazz, funk, fusion).

No, but because of you, I found the trailer! https://youtu.be/44xBUUCeLWs

Wish I had known about the production! I think I still have his raw footage boxed somewhere. He was a crusty old queen but I always appreciated that he let me invade his drum space with my camera. I should probably find his son, Kofe, and give it to him.

Thank you for sharing that film! I’ll have to find it and watch!

I got my driver's license in the spring of 1979 and so I spent the summer driving my Dad's car as much as possible and anybody else's car who would let me borrow it. I always brought it back with a full tank of gas and the tires inflated so I usually found myself with a car to drive that summer.

Anyway, there were two Earth, Wind & Fire songs that were big that summer, "Boogie Wonderland" and "After The Love Has Gone." So those two songs remind me of that time, when I would just drive for the sake of driving, with the windows rolled down and the radio cranking.

My favorite band that summer was The Cars. They had just put out their second album "Candy-O" and of course their first album was a pop masterpiece and still getting a lot of airplay.

As for all-time favorite group, that's hard one as there are so many great bands. But one band whose entire output stands the test of time is Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. I don't think there was an "off" album in their entire catalog. Just one classic after another. His solo albums were good as well.
