I’d really like to see that 8,054 number from a more credible source than IWB.

Me too, but the reasoning seems sound enough that we should be looking?

OK, here's fresh numbers from the CDC:

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/covidview/index.html

(From just above the second chart from the bottom of the page...)

...Among 8,672 hospitalized adults with information on
underlying medical conditions, 91% had at least one
reported underlying medical condition.
The most commonly
reported were hypertension, obesity, chronic metabolic
disease, and cardiovascular disease. Among 180 hospitalized
children with information on underlying conditions,
51.7% had at least one reported underlying medical
condition. The most commonly reported were obesity,
asthma, and neurologic conditions.

And further down:

...Based on death certificate data available on July 2, 2020,
5.9% of all deaths occurring during the week ending June 27,
2020 (week 26) were due to pneumonia, influenza or COVID-19
(PIC). This is the tenth consecutive week of a declining
percentage of deaths due to PIC.

For the CDC's Death totals for COVID19 we go here:

OK! For a trusted source, I'm going to break out my
trusty HP-11C calculator emulator on my iPhone.

So, the CDC thinks 91% had at least one underlying condition.

That leaves 9% that died of COVID19 alone.

The CDC tells us there were 118,598 US Deaths involving
COVID19.

118,598 X 0.09 = 10,674 (Rounding UP!)

I calculate, from the CDC's numbers...

10,674 US Deaths from COVID19 Alone.
ie. Without additional morbidity(s).

(My two REAL HP-11C calculators give the same answer.)

SO there you have it.
From the CDC and my most trusted calculators.

I suspect your mileage won't vary much.

Here's IWB's take from back in June.
