Softball and baseball pitchers are (Softball 40 feet, Baseball 60'6") from the batter when they start a pitch, maybe ten feet less than that when they release the ball and can be hit by batted balls, broken hunks of bats or the entire bat if the batter loses it.
I've caught and umpired both games, have lost count of the number of pitchers I've seen get hurt and wouldn't allow any of our kids on the field at any level of play without protective equipment (cup, face mask, light chest guard)...especially if they were pitching and double that if those [BLEEP] metal bats are involved.

Son is 6’5”...he wears a special mask when he pitches softball...and a mouthpiece.
