SCOTUS Big Decisions: Rules NY DA Can Subpoena Pres. Trump For Tax Returns, Blocks Congress From Accessing His Finances

The U.S. Supreme Court made two important decisions Thursday regarding the government’s ability to access Pres. Donald Trump’s tax documents.

In the first decision, the court ruled that the New York District Attorney is allowed the power to subpoena Trump for his tax returns.

“This is a tremendous victory for our nation’s system of justice and its founding principle that no one – not even a president – is above the law,” Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance said in a statement of the decision. “Our investigation, which was delayed for almost a year by this lawsuit, will resume, guided as always by the grand jury’s solemn obligation to follow the law and the facts, wherever they may lead.”
The second decision, however, blocked Congress from gaining access to Trump’s tax records. Moreover, the issue will be handed down to a lower court.

“Without limits on its subpoena powers, Congress could ‘exert an imperious controul’ over the Executive Branch and aggrandize itself at the President’s expense, just as the Framers feared, Chief Justice John Robert’s wrote of the court’s decision.
