A statue in Boston’s Park Square depicting a freed slave kneeling in front of Abraham Lincoln is coming down 141 years after is was given to the city. The Boston Art Commission has voted unanimously to remove the monument — known as the Emancipation Group statue or the Freedman’s Memorial. It’s located just off Boston Common. Mayor Martin Walsh backed the decision Tuesday night.

The statue in Boston is a copy of the Emancipation Memorial in Washington DC. The latter is the one that the freedmen actually paid for. The Boston statue was a gift of a civic minded benefactor, who thought that emancipation, freedmen, and the martyred Great Emancipator were worthy of commemoration and remembrance. Clearly he was not progressive enough for Boston today.

I do not know if the Boston copy was made from the original mould by the original artist.

Exactly! Thank you for pointing that out.
Composition is key. The “slave” is not kneeling before Lincoln - he’s kneeling before (and facing) freedom. He is rising.
The outstretched arm of Lincoln - which is the real bone of contention - indicates that freedom was granted through his agency.
If we were to recommission the statue for today, given the goals of the Democrat party - the slave would be on his rear end with his arms wrapped around Joe Biden’s legs with one palm extended and open begging for scraps.

I would like to see a second statue put near this Lincoln statue and the similar one in DC. Make the 2nd nearby state of a well dressed black man and his family standing tall and admiring the Lincoln emancipation statue with reverence and admiration for the survival of the enslaved and gratitude that northern whites and President Lincoln sacrificed their own lives to free and give independence to enslaved Americans.

Will they be replacing it with a statue of John Wilkes Booth...?
