I think I would like the Kudzo comic strip. What you said and an instant search reminded me of Pogo. My much older sister had Pogo books and I learned how to read with them, around age 4. I didn’t get most of it (obviously) but I loved those books.

Pogo lived in the Okefenokee Swamp which is about 35 miles due west of me.

He is famous for the line, "We have met the enemy and he is us".
