LOL, it took "Captain Underpants" to encourage my kids to read.
Daughter’s 1st grade teacher was fired because most of the class was reading on a 6th grade level. Zipped through the 1st grade reader in the first six weeks so got to read on their own in the library for the rest of the year so the teacher could help the special ed and ESL kids back in the room. Nope, nope, nope. Can’t have any student bypassing the lowest common denominators. This from a conservative school.
These kids started out in a little couple of mornings a week church pre-school together. The group didn’t hang together through school but were all (except one) honor graduates despite some horrid teachers and admin. who went out of their way to slap them down. I suspect their success had a lot to do with the parents of that pre-school group.
A little bit of parenting goes a long way. Too bad so many parents had rather be out rioting or at a bar or on the street corner or not getting their noses out of their phones long enough to make sure their kids have their homework done.
