This statement tells it all. Heard a Smithsonian speaker on the way slaves were chosen to be in “the house” vs “the field”. His theory was those chosen for the house were those that “seemed more intelligent and docile in manner”.

The Smithsonian Lecturer said it was because when they were speaking of biblical things, stories, or hymns the slaves with Christian background would recognize names, stories, hymns and although non English speaking would be seen as smarter than the “average” slave and therefore more teachable and adaptable to be in the house around family.
