It’s not just about Tacoma. It’s about Lakewood specifically.
It's been 30 years since I lived in the Puget Sound and I avoided Tacoma. I remember everyone saying to stay out of the Hilltop District. Is Lakewood near the Hilltop?

Yep. Directly east and on the east side of I-5. Like you, I was warned about the Hilltop area and actually drove through it one time. Lakewood is, IMO, worse. It is a place to be avoided like some parts of LA.
