You know what, Melian, I don't think it's odd.
I think I see @Jack's reasoning.

I, and many like me have been able to operate
on Twitter with just an email based login, and
as long as we didn't use Twitter on our phones,

Twitter would not have our phone number.

They want our phone number to get back copy/paste.

And I bet it's everybody. Check your iPads, folks.

I'm also curious whether the same move has been made
against Android tablets.

It used to be that my Twitter app stayed signed in and I could go from a FR link right to Twitter without signing in, it does not let me do that any more.
