How about this - in ancient times, before coins were flattened with 2 sides, they were balls. And in those days, to flip a coin was to roll a ball. Prior to the flip, which was often used to decide whether the Lions or Christians would have home field advantage, the flipper guy would say “call the ball”. He’d then roll it and whichever side was up, when it stopped would determine the winner of the toss.
