Good thread. Only exception is 'enemy combatants'.. Not a Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) term. Only those who are sponsored by a state are lawful combatants and afforded 'rights'. Everyone else engaged is an unlawful combatant.

Why it matters:

Unlawful Combatants Article on the Taliban, but those so engaged now are the same category.
