Higher sales tax. General Mills in Maine is already working on it. Not one thing has been cut in Maine government.

Open the economy and this problem will slowly go away.

Politicians made this happen.

You folks are all focusing on the financial aspects of this. But no one is discussing the other aspects of the lack of sufficient tax revenue. Blacks will be re-enslaved and homosexuals will all be thrown off roofs. Browns will all be deported (even the legal ones) and children will all be neglected and starve. The forests will all be razed to the ground and sea levels will rise dramatically. Membership in the Klan will skyrocket and women will lose the right to vote. Not to mention cats and dogs living together.

Maybe...just maybe, the governments could downsize by cutting the 50% (at a minimum) dead weight, by cutting pensions, by cutting benefits, by closing duplicate departments, by stopping travel to meetings (use skype or ?), by cutting the various perks the “workers” have and so forth. But, no...likely they will raise taxes and hire more government “workers” to make the Citizens’ lives more difficult.

-1- Localities issue bonds.

-2- The Fed buys the bonds.

-3- Fed forgives bonds?

CUT SPENDING!

For government that means cutting jobs when unemployment's already probably 25%.

Want the economy to recover?

Exactly.
Cut spending and tighten your belts, at least for a year.

I am sure that tax increases will happen.

If there are shortfalls of 30%, as in your example, I would expect that the powers that be will raise tax rates by 30%, to make up that shortfall.

I expect there will be packages of spending cuts and tax increases to make up the deficits projected. In most states, the tax revenue comes from state income taxes, sales tax, gas and diesel taxes, property taxes, car registration fees, and a broad amount of taxes on businesses. Expect increases in all categories of taxation. But the powers that be will do it so that there are not huge increases in any one type of tax. Then they will say that, for example, income taxes went up “only” 10%, or sales tax went up only “2 percentage points”, etc.

I am bracing for the shock waves in California, as California is projecting a $54 billion budget deficit. That’s serious money. A few billion here and a few billion there, and you are talking about real money. Not to be too flippant, but all of us are going to have increased taxes and fees to pay, everywhere in America.

I hope we can avoid a federal income tax increase. If Biden wins the election, a federal income tax increase is virtually certain to happen, on top of all the state and local tax increases we are facing.

You’ll get nowhere with sound logic and cogent ideas.

I am sure that tax increases will happen.

Funny, as if those paying the taxes have not been hit with the brunt of this shutdown, losing jobs, businesses, investments, opportunities, can't make rent, car payments, mortgages etc...

Based on this, government at all levels will simply need to downsize and cut back significantly.

“They open the doors to commerce. It’s Trump’s ultimate trump card.”

Yup. When they have to start laying off teacher’s union members is when it gets real for D’s. In my state at least, the D machine does not function without teacher’s union money and bodies. And when the NGO’s who provide the ecosystem the D’s live in start losing grants and vig, it gets even worse.

The people who support the unions and the NGO’s financially are taxpayers, who aren’t paying much in the way of taxes right now.

So our rulers suddenly have to start making hard choices. Do I stop fixing potholes in the roads or eliminate a grant to a mental health for minority and trans felons program (which subsidizes their woke caring professions ecosystem) or do I eliminate money to keep paying members of the teacher’s union. (Obviously, they will stop fixing potholes first but that doesn’t last long).

Most of their supporters are hiding at home clutching pearls certain that leaving their home will result in sudden, painful death on a ventilator.

D’s who run things here live in a tiny little bubble populated by other woke people.

They hardly know anyone who has lost a job or a business because of the lockdowns. When teachers unions and NGO’s start hurting, suddenly, they will know someone who got hurt and it will hurt their personal and campaign pocketbooks directly.

That’s when they will suddenly decide that we have to open up!

Hadn’t thought of that although I should have. Because spending a lot of tax money has fixed all of those problems! And now they have to come unfixed!

Treasury should have eliminated paycheck to the House which is not in session. Eliminate govt credit cards and aids. No real impact but politicians should feel some of the effects the rest of us have had to endure.

On a larger scale, eliminate “non essential” govt department and agencies.
