I haven’t seen evidence that he is corrupt, and I don’t think he is evil, but he has been wrong. He has been wrong a lot.
He’s proof that being in a job a long time may result in deep experience, but also locks a person into one way of thinking and breeds a sense of invincibility by thinking that past experience is always the best preparation to deal with future threats. All of his professional experience convinced him to rely on models, first the Oxford one which is pure shite, and then the UWash one, which was just wrong. Having tunnel vision with regard to modelling produced bad decisions, and the fact that they were bad models made them even worse.
He may have been the right person on the org chart but he was the wrong person to lead the formulation of policy on this virus.
