WMAL is the #1 radio station in the DC market for the first time in decades! Take a look at the Nielsen radio ratings for April 2020! (And many in media have said in the past that a conservative news talk station would NEVER make it in a city and region like Washington, DC!)
Congratulations to WMAL -- Mary Walter, Vince Cogliniese, Larry O'Connor, Chris Plante, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, Ben Shapiro, John Batchelor.
Chris Plante is the best show out there hands down.
Makes sense. I’m sure the libs listen to Rush is only to “catch” him on anything he might say. How do radio ratings work? Self reporting, like the Nielson ratings?
I listen online from TX.
Starting at 8am to 9pm. ....
This morning Mark Simone ,on WOR ,in NY said the same about his ratings in the 10-12 spot.
As a new teleworker, I listen while not in a meeting. Before March in the morning and evening.
I’ve been listening since the 90’s, The morning drive show has rotated out some good people, Plante is under-rated, and Rush is Rush.
BUT there has not been anything to compete. No live sports which has made sports talk just a regurgitation of the same talking points since February. Plus, everyone is at home.
Their 6-8am Saturday show is probably the best weekend show in the business IMO. Try to catch it because they have KT McFarland, Tony Schaffer, John Gizzi and a few others that just know their stuff. Great format and great insight.
I’ll listen until the Democrats ban it.
Yes!!! Thank you. He was great listening.
How has Hugh Hewitt fared in DC. I don’t see his Salem station listed
He’s lost favor in my mind, kissing up to the likes of Chuck Todd and such, but is still in a ‘Republican’ radio column.
Anyone know ?
He is laugh out loud funny.
I miss Andy and Grandy!
Usually listen to WCBM Baltimore in the morning til Chris.
Tell the folks at WMAL congrats! We retired and moved to Arkansas, but faithfully listened to WMAL during drive time and in the evening for over 25 years when we lived in Fairfax County. Best to all!!
Remember when they had Joe and Mika doing a show!
It was about the time Andy and Grandy left. I didn’t know who they were back then. Listened for about a 1/2 hour and turned it off. I thought what in the heck is WMAL thinking!!
p.s. Haven’t heard you on Chris lately!
I love the REDEYE guys from 1-5am.
Congrats to WMAL. I’ve begun listening to Larry O’Conner in the afternoons via computer out here in Indiana. We get 2 hours of Chris Plante via WLS (890 AM) just before Rush. And I always listen to Joe diGenova every Monday morning.
Yes, it was Tom Marr, he guest hosted for Rush a few times and had his own show on WCBM (680-AM) in Baltimore, Maryland.
Might have been Ron Smith ("Mr. Reason") who died of pancreatic cancer. A good guy overall --he lost me when he went berzerk over Bush/Iraq.
I love Chris Plante. But he can be exhausting — IDK if it’s his delivery or just the overwhelming amount of info.
It was Tom Marr as a previous poster reminded me.
I had stumbled upon him while on a work assignment in DC years ago. He had such a common sense take on things and a great voice. Wish I had found him earlier.
Me too!
Listen to their podcasts on the weekends if I have time (lately I have) but AFTER I listen to Bongino’s.
There are some weak links in WMAL’s lineup:
1. The K-Mart Wolverine, Larry O’Connor. This guy is sympathetic to conservatives but comes across as a complete, unmitigated douchebag.
2. Morning “news anchor” John Matthews. I don’t think he is related to Chris Matthews, but he is a liberal through and through. Disgusting. I refer to him as “Tingles Junior”.
3. Afternoon “news anchor” Maria Leaf, the “Testosterone Queen”. WMAL’s programming strategy is to counterbalance the conservative talk hosts with really disgusting, biased liberal news readers. Maria is beyond annoying, with her attempts to sound like AM newsreader of the 1980s David Haynes. She is a real embarrassment.
4. Relief “news anchor” Barbie Britt. If Webster had a picture next to the word “vapid”, Barbie’s picture would be there. Another mindless liberal in the WMAL newsroom.
5. WMAL is owned by Atlanta-based Cumulus, which has a network news deal with CNN. Cumulus is too crooked to have the CNN news voices such as Ann Cates and Linda Kenyon (who promounces her name “Lindy Kenyong”) identify themselves as CNN employees and operatives.
6. Fortunately, WMAL employs the great Vince Coglianese and Chris Plante as local hosts, and then has Rush, Mark Levin and the Red Eye Radio guys (Gerry McNamara and Eric Harley).
So, while far from perfect, WMAL has the second best programming in the DC market (the best programming is on AM 1160, WMET, the Guadalupe Radio Network, the all Catholic station here in Washington, which is run by incredible people out of Midland, Texas).
