I’ve heard people under ventilators have to be sedated, the process is so horrible. Maybe vents could be used off labe; dual purpose so to speak? Especially if insuffecient sedation is used, hmm?

What you say is true essentially. After all, the ventilator is working directly against normal breathing instinct. It takes an act of TOTAL submission to deal with one consciously.
Hell, just getting the breathing tube crammed down the airway is a monumental accomplishment on some patients

I woke up in the hospital intubated...had pneumonia-related respiratory failure in 2017; I was a smoker and couldn’t fight it without a ventilator.
It was way past horrible. I am lucky to be alive and not on oxygen. The Lord was good to me.
I won’t touch a cigarette with a ten foot pole now.
