I am not so sure that it is a simpler task. The main purpose of a self-driving car is to move the occupant from his origin to the destination of his choosing. The purpose of a fighter plane is to shoot down enemy planes and other airborne targets. If you don't have to worry about the safety of the occupant, it could be easier. If, instead of building a self-driving car you simply had to have a car controlled by remote with a human viewing the same camera angles as a regular driver with similar controls, combined with tactile and auditory feedback, it would be comparatively trivial (until you go in a tel and lose your radio connectivity).

AI is a bad joke.
Sure, you can monitor everything today. But the fixed data is so bad, the idea of dynamic data being correct via satellite is much less likely.
