Aren’t they actually called suppressors? /typical journalism
Calling it a suppressor (true to what it does) versus calling it a silencer (somewhat misleading since the reader/listener believes it makes it silent) can stir up an argument in some circles but the inventor, Maxim Hiram, applied for a patent of his device which he marketed and sold as the "Maxim Silencer".
