That sounds like the L strain. It went through Italy we suspect and then New York. It is more virulent and deadly. The original strain was called S strain for source strain. But that was early research on the topic. The Chinese claimed the L strain spread faster and burned itself out supposedly and the S strain ended up being dominant. So we are on the L train now. Fast infection rate.
