The virus could easily have been, and probably was, in the US in December. But the number of infected would have been tiny and your (anybody’s) chance of having contacted and been infected by one of them also tiny.
The people claiming they ‘had it already’ any time before early February are #MeTooFakingIt - unless they can trace it to a known case or traveler from China, etc. It simply isn’t statistically plausible that all these people saying they had it to promote their belief that there is herd immunity are correct - even if they believe it themselves, which in many cases I doubt.

People believe what they want to believe, what they need to believe.
I have concluded that people do what they want to do, then make up excuses, reasons, justifications, theories, after the fact to justify their behaviors.

I’m guessing some people got it prior to its existence being known, but given hospitals didn’t get slammed, I’m also guessing that it was mostly the S strain (milder).
