My mother and also my grandmother (who lived with us) made it regularly.
I thought it smelled horrible so I never ate it.

It seems like it was on the menu every week, two weeks on the extreme.
Have you ever watched birds that eat the berries?
They go crazy - even fly into horses, barns, etc.
